I read a really interesting quote the other day from John Mayer. I know many people might not like John Mayer; maybe they don’t like what he stands for, or parts of his personal life. They might not even like his style of music, but I think John Mayer has some great insight and something we as followers of Jesus need to pay attention to.
John Mayer says, ” I hope that what it comes down to at the end of the day, is that people believe that I believe what I’m singing. It comes down to being believable.”
Isn’t that profound? And, from someone that doesn’t frequent church? Every week we drive to Grace Chapel, we find a parking spot, we walk into the building, if we have kids we drop them off in Kidventure, we get a cup of coffee and we find a seat in the worship center. About the time you sit down, I usually ask you to stand back up so that we can sing. In that moment you are faced with a hard reality; Do I really believe this stuff we sing about? When people hear or watch me sing, do they think I am believable?
Do people believe that you believe what you are singing? I have to ask myself that question. Do people believe that I believe what I am singing?
Some days it doesn’t seem very believable because my heart is far from God. Maybe the worries and anxieties of life are choking out all that you thought you believed about God. Maybe the most profound relationships in your life are being threatened by death, economic collapse, strife or divorce…and then it grabs you. As you sip your coffee and ‘go through the motions’ a line from a song grabs your heart. A wave of emotion comes over you like you haven’t felt in a long time. Tears begin to well up from no where and you know that you are in the presence of God. This is as believable as it gets.
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. - Psalm 149:1
After most worship services, people will come up and tell me how the Lord met them while they were worshiping through singing. Then they ask me where they can download the songs so they can remember what God did in that moment and continue their times of worship in their car, home, office, or wherever they find themselves.
So here is a list of some of the newer songs we have been doing at Grace Chapel. My hope is that these songs would become more and more believable each time you sing them!!
